About Potters Bar
Potters Bar is a town in the Hertsmere borough of Hertfordshire, situated 18 miles north of central London in the postal district of EN6. In 2001 it had a population of 21618. The town’s origins lie in the early 13th century and remained a relatively small settlement until the appearance of the Great Northern Railway in 1850. It is part of London’s commuter belt. Allen and Young Ltd carry out all moving services including removals, man and van, storage, packing and house clearance in the Potters Bar area.
The origin of the Potters component of the town’s name is uncertain but is generally thought to be derived from evidence of a Roman pottery that was thought to have been sited locally, or alternatively from the family Pottere who lived in the parish of South Mimms. The Bar component is thought either to refer to the gates leading from the South Mimms parish and into the Enfield Chase parish, or possibly from some sort of toll levied on the Great North Road. The original “Bar” is said to have been located at what is now the Green Man pub, or at the current entrance to Movern House.
Potters Bar was sited on the Great North Road, one of 2 road routes from the City of London to the north of England. The road was originally numbered as the A1, but later became the A1000.
