About New Barnet
New Barnet is in the London Borough of Barnet in North London. It is a mainly residential north London suburb. It is near to the M25, A1 and M1, and is located in the Enfield postal districts EN4 and EN5.
New Barnet owes its origins to the building of the Great Northern Railway in 1850 when a station serving Barnet was built. With the station being located about a mile away from the town centre of Barnet, this particular area quickly saw development. The main road (A110), Station Road and East Barnet Road, serves to connect Barnet to East Barnet with bus services. Allen and Young Ltd carry out all moving services including removals, man and van, storage, packing and house clearance in the New Barnet area.
The main commercial part of New Barnet is on East Barnet Road, near the railway station. A number of office blocks were erected in Station Road in the 1960s & 70s, some of which have now been converted to flats. A large Sainsbury’s supermarket opened 30th September 1980 and is surrounded by a cluster of small independent shops. These local shops have been under threat of demolition from a large mixed-use scheme planned by Tesco. There is also a rival scheme planned by ASDA on the old gasworks site. There is widespread local concern about the two planned developments, which would dramatically increase traffic in the area, and in the case of the Tesco development, would see much of the remaining Victorian architecture on East Barnet Road demolished. A ‘Save New Barnet’ campaign has been set up to oppose the planned developments and to offer alternatives to the two proposals.
Pubs in New Barnet include The Railway Tavern, The Railway Bell, The Builders Arms, The Lord Kitchener, The Alexandra, and The Buck & Bailey.
